Typing Test
Start typing to begin. Words per minute, accuracy and errors update live, and you get a speed-over-time chart at the end.
How the score works
WPM (words per minute) counts correctly typed characters, including the spaces after correct words, divided by five — the standard length of a “word” in typing tests — per minute. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong, so it shows your finger speed before errors.
Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that matched the text when you typed them. Fixing a mistake with Backspace doesn’t erase the original error, so accuracy reflects how cleanly you typed, not just the final text.
Your best WPM for each mode and length is saved in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is typical for adults who type regularly. 60–80 WPM is fast and comfortable for office work, and above 100 WPM is the range of competitive typists. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed.
Which test length should I use?
15 and 30 seconds measure burst speed. 60 seconds is the most common benchmark and the fairest comparison with other sites. 120 seconds shows endurance and tends to be a few WPM lower.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the text to open your keyboard. Autocorrect is turned off for the input, but some keyboards still suggest words; turning off predictive text gives the most honest score.
How do I restart quickly?
Press Esc, or Tab then Enter, at any time. The Restart button does the same.
Where do the quotes come from?
They’re short passages from public-domain books and speeches (Dickens, Austen, Melville, Lincoln, Thoreau and others), plus a couple of lines written for this site.
