How it counts
Words are runs of letters or digits, so “don’t”, “e-mail” and “2026” each count as one. Characters are counted the way people see them: an emoji or accented letter is one character, not several.
Reading time assumes 238 words per minute (the average for adult silent reading of non-fiction); speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

How many characters fit in a tweet or meta description?
An X post allows 280 characters; search engines usually show about 150–160 characters of a meta description and 50–60 of a page title. The platform limits panel tracks all of these live.
