How to pick a good username

Short and sayable wins. A name people can spell after hearing it once is easier to find and mention. Aim for 6–12 characters and avoid runs of look-alike letters such as rnm or Il1.

Use your word as the anchor. Type a nickname, hobby or pet’s name and the generator mixes it with the chosen style. It pairs the word with others, adds endings, and blends overlapping words together, so pixel and elf become pixelf.

Match the platform. Picking a platform limits results to its maximum length and allowed characters. For example, X allows 15 characters and underscores, Discord only lowercase, and GitHub hyphens but not underscores. Numbers and separators make a name more likely to be free, but try the plain version first.

Questions

Does it check whether a username is available?

No. Checking availability would mean sending your ideas to each platform, and this tool doesn’t send anything anywhere. Star a few favorites, then search for them on the platform or try them in its sign-up form.

How long can a username be on each platform?

At the time of writing: X 15 characters, Snapchat 15, Minecraft 16, PlayStation 16, Reddit 20, TikTok 24, Twitch 25, Instagram 30, YouTube handles 30, Discord 32, Steam 32 and GitHub 39. Xbox gamertags show up to 12 characters, and a number suffix is added when a name is taken. Platforms change these rules from time to time.

Where are my saved names stored?

Only in this browser’s local storage. Nothing is uploaded, so they won’t follow you to another device. Use “Copy all” to take them with you.

What makes a good gamer tag?

Something short, easy to type into a friend request, and readable in a kill feed or chat. Two strong words (ShadowViper) or a word plus a short ending (Pyrox) read better than long strings of numbers. Add a number only if the plain name is taken.
