How the conversions work
Every unit is stored as an exact factor to one base unit per category (metres, kilograms, litres, pascals and so on), using the legal definitions: an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a pound exactly 0.45359237 kg, a US gallon exactly 231 cubic inches. Results are shown to 10 significant figures.
Temperature isn’t a simple multiplication because the scales have different zero points, so it converts through kelvin. Fuel economy is reciprocal: miles per gallon measures distance per fuel, litres per 100 km measures fuel per distance, so 235.2 ÷ mpg (US) gives L/100 km.
Data sizes come in two families. SI prefixes (kB, MB, GB) step by 1,000; IEC prefixes (KiB, MiB, GiB) step by 1,024. That’s why a “1 TB” drive shows about 931 GiB in your operating system.
Questions
How many centimetres are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54. The inch has been defined as 25.4 mm since 1959, so 12 inches (one foot) is 30.48 cm.
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. 350 °F is (350 − 32) × 5/9 ≈ 176.7 °C. Going the other way, multiply by 9/5 and add 32.
Is a US cup the same as a UK or metric cup?
No. A US customary cup is 236.6 mL, a metric cup (Australia, Canada, New Zealand) is 250 mL, and the old UK imperial cup was 284 mL. Recipes from different countries can differ by up to 20%.
How do I convert mpg to litres per 100 km?
Divide 235.215 by the US mpg figure (or 282.481 by UK mpg). 30 mpg (US) is about 7.84 L/100 km. The conversion is reciprocal, so the scales run in opposite directions.
Why does my 1 TB drive show less space?
The drive is sold in decimal terabytes (10¹² bytes). Windows and some other systems count in binary units (2⁴⁰ bytes) but label them TB, so the same capacity shows as about 931 “GB”. Nothing is missing.
